Boracay is an island in the Philippines that is becoming one of the major tourist destinations in the world. Boracay is located not far from Manila, the capital of the Philippines, at the tip of the island region known as the Western Visayas. The island has recently become famous after being consistently named one of the top 10 tourist destinations in the world for several years now.

Named for its white-sand beaches and clear waters, Boracay is a small island (about 4 sq. miles) that is only home to around 30,000 year-round residents. What makes the island famous is the prevalence of some of the Philippines’ most exclusive and luxurious resorts. Boracay is one of the top vacation destinations globally, with world-class spas, beaches, and a variety of activities including scuba-diving, sailing, and many other watersports.

In April of 2018, the Philppine government ordered the shutdown of Boracay Island, citing major environmental concerns and a desire to keep such concerns away from tourists. As a result, many of the resorts on the island have since been operating at limited capacity due to the restrictions on travel to the island. Boracay’s main tourist season is from October to April, so there is hope that more people will be able to experience the island this coming season once the restrictions are limited.
